An exquisite and regal oversized portrait of the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II, signed in the year of her coronation. The 16.5" x 12" portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing her crown jewels, taken by Royal Court photographer Dorothy Wilding, affixed to its original 22" x 18" mount, nicely signed to the lower mount in fountain pen, "Elizabeth R, 1953." Original Wilding label to reverse, along with a pencil notation that reads "RAF Sopley". This was also written on the back of the antique frame that the portrait was salvaged from. It's most likely that the portrait was on display at the Sopley military base - the Queen's photo was often displayed at military stations, to raise moral and bolster patriotism.
In near fine condition, with slight waviness to the mount/photo, which could be easily flattened by framing. This image of the newly ascended Elizabeth II is very similar to the portrait that was used for the Wilding series of definitive postage stamps of Great Britain that were in use between 1952 and 1971. A beautiful portrait of the young Queen at the dawn of her reign.
