J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone [London: Bloomsbury, 1997]. First English paperback edition, first printing. The book meets all the criteria for a true first impression: Wendy Cooling review on the front cover, the publisher listed as Bloomsbury at the bottom of the title page, the print line on the copyright page reads “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1”, the seventh line of text on the copyright page without a space between “Taylor” and “1997”, on page 53 the item “1 wand” appears twice in the list of school supplies that Harry receives from Hogwarts, "Philosopher's" miss-spelled "Philospher's" on the back cover and "Wizardry and Witchcraft" [rather than "Witchcraft and Wizardry"] on rear cover.
We are not professional book graders, but in our opinion this is a good example of an extremely desirable first edition. Internally good with usual toning around page edges, light creasing to the covers, tear to lower corner of pp.7/8, a few marks in places and to edges of text-block, some offsetting to endpapers from a previous protective mylar jacket, shelf-lean, wrappers good & bold, slightly faded at spine, vertical spine crease. First impressions of Rowling's seminal work continue to climb in price — a copy in fine condition sold for $22,387 in February 2024 — so don't miss the opportunity to add this key book to your collection.
