Annie Besant autograph
Annie Besant was a British theosophist, women's rights activist, and writer (1847-1933) who also became involved in Indian politics as an advocate for home rule. Offered here is an autographed fragment from a program of service. Signed to the lower portion of the front page and with the location and date printed as "Adyar, 2nd February, 1918". Signed in blue ink.
Besant campaigned for the rights of Indians and for Indian 'home rule'. She launched the Home Rule League in 1916, modelling the Indian plight on that of Ireland. She was a member of the Fabian Society, owing to her close relationship with George Bernard Shaw. In 1917 she became the first woman president of the Indian National Congress at a session in Calcutta. She passed away in Adyar on 20th September 1933.
