An appointment document, signed "Elizabeth R.," one page, 17 x 13 inches, November 15th 1986. The Queen appoints "Our Trusty and Well-beloved Peter Warren Chandley, Esquire, Member of Our Royal Victorian Order" as Our Consul for the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, to reside at Abidjan. Signed prominently in the upper right by Queen Elizabeth II, and countersigned below by Geoffrey Howe as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. Geoffrey Howe was Margaret Thatcher's longest-serving Cabinet minister, successively holding the posts of chancellor of the Exchequer, foreign secretary, and finally leader of the House of Commons, deputy prime minister and Lord President of the Council. His resignation from Cabinet on November 1st 1990 is widely considered to have precipitated the leadership challenge that led to Thatcher's resignation three weeks later.
