Steve Kaufman (1960-2010)
Muhammad Ali. A hand embellished silkscreen on canvas, stretched over a wooden frame. From an edition of 50 Artist's Proofs. Very good condition, with some slight cracking to the lower left corner. Numbered and signed "SAK" (Steven Alan Kaufman) to verso. Signed in gold pen to recto by Ali, "Muhammad Ali AKA Cassius Clay". From the Olympic Series, circa 1995-97. 40 x 40 inches.
Steve Kaufman epitomized pop culture during his short life, producing a prodigious array of artwork. More than that, he was a humanitarian who arranged art auctions for a variety of causes: homeless people, AIDS patients, 9/11 victims and first responders, and inner-city youth, among many others. He was integral to Andy Warhol’s studio, The Factory, particularly in perfecting silkscreen techniques. Kaufman prints are highly prized for their vivid colours, many of them hand embellished. He is particularly known for his Comic Book Pop Art superheroes, as well as his portraits of pop icons.
