ALS, one page [both sides], 4.5 x 7.5 inches, on embossed Sandringham, Norfolk letterhead, January 5th 1936. King George VI [Prince Albert of York at the time of this letter] writes to Geoffrey Jellicoe, discussing his designs for the formal terrace at Royal Lodge, Windsor. It was one of Jellicoe’s first royal commissions and helped establish his growing reputation. The letter reads in full: "Dear Mr Jellicoe, Many thanks for your letter and for the sketches. Your idea I am sure is the best not to cover up the building too much. Would you get Willetts, who have been doing the house, to make the course, the ogees and crowns over the windows or somebody else? I am glad this knotty problem has been settled at last. I hear Woods are getting on well with the garden. Your sincerely, George R. I.". In fine condition, with central fold from original mailing.
Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (1990 – 1996) was an English landscape architect, garden designer, landscape and garden historian, lecturer and author. He was knighted in the Queen's 1979 Birthday Honours for services to landscape architecture.
