A pair of John Lennon's prescription sunglasses, circa 1980. Possibly Hakusan "Mayfair" glasses, that Lennon was known to wear in 1980. There are no brand identifiers on the caramel coloured frames, but one arm does have Korea engraved on it. Hakusan Masachika is a Japanese eyewear brand, but it's probable that they produced or assembled frames in South Korea, which became an important hub for eyewear manufacturing during the period. They look extremely similar to sunglasses that Lennon was photographed wearing in late 1970's and 1980.
The sunglasses come directly from the collection of Stephen Buckley (stage name, Stephen MacKenna), the actor who starred as John Lennon in the 1979 film, "Birth of the Beatles". Included is a signed letter of provenance from Mr MacKenna stating the glasses were a gift from Cindy Rebello, who worked for the Lennon's in the 1970's, after she was unable to set up a meeting between Stephen and John Lennon in New York. Rebello also gave him a signed copy of John's book, The Penguin, and three private photos she had taken of John and Harry Nielson at a hotel during the 1974 March of Dimes Benefit in NYC on April 28th of that year. These are not included in this sale, but we have shown images of these items in the listing for your perusal. We've also shared several reference photos showing Lennon wearing very similar sunglasses. Please see the scan of Mr Buckley's letter of provenance for the full story behind the glasses.
