Historic autographed letter sent by the three living members of Led Zeppelin to their former manager and Chief Executive of Swan Song Records, Peter Grant. Grant, widely regarded as one of the shrewdest and most ruthless managers in rock history, had all but retired from the music industry following John Bonham's death and the subsequent breakup of Led Zeppelin in 1980. The Swan Song label had faltered under his stewardship and ceased operations in 1983. At the time Grant was afflicted by marital problems, diabetes and a heavy cocaine addiction.
The strongly worded two-page letter was sent in March 1990 and requests that Grant refrain from involving himself in the operation of Swan Song Inc., which they were trying to resurrect at the time and "expect in due course to be appointed as the Directors of" (Grant had apparently made inquiries after hearing of the forthcoming release of the digitally remastered Led Zeppelin 4-Compact Disc set). Drawing on his past failures as CEO of the label, the three state that "We believe you had full and fair opportunity to be involved in the Company several years ago and that your involvement then ultimately led to your removal as an Officer and Director of the Company, the liquidation of its parent company and ensuing litigation against you by Swan Song. The state in which the Company was found at the time of your removal required substantial efforts over the course of years to revitalise and restore the company to solvency." The letter concludes by reiterating that in return for not interfering "with the operation of Swan Song in any way", they will assure that Grant's "lawful rights as a minority shareholder will be honored". Boldly signed by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in blue ink and John Paul Jones in black.
Accompanied by a typed letter of provenance from Anna George - a close personal friend of Peter Grant - who states that he gave her the letter shortly after becoming aware of the bands intention to release the digitally remastered CD set. Anna George purchased Horselunges Manor, Hellingly, Sussex from Peter Grant in 1988 and also accompanied him to the USA to meet with Ahmet Ertegun (founder and President of Atlantic Records) to discuss matters elating to Swan Song Inc. and the forthcoming CD release. Also included is a copy of the four Compact Disc Led Zeppelin release on Atlantic Records. The box cover has been signed by Peter Grant, however the ink has faded and only the indentation of the pen remains visible. A fascinating letter that binds Led Zeppelin with the their hugely influential former manager, a man who is widely credited with improving pay and conditions for musicians in their dealings with concert promoters.
