Scarce autographed real-photo postcard of the popular Victorian era painter who became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire. Born in Dronryp, the Netherlands (Lourens Alma Tadema), he settled in London in 1870, later achieving British denizenship. The 3.5 x 5.5" postcard captures Alma-Tadema perfecting his craft and is signed in black ink to the border, "L. Alma-Tadema, 31 Aug 1904". In excellent condition, with corner impressions and mild silvering.
