A 10 x 8 photo of Vice President George Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev shaking hands in Moscow, signed by Gorbachev in Cyrillic. The image was taken by the official White House photographer, Dave Valdez. Valdez's credit and a date of March 14, 1985 stamped to the verso. G-VG condition, with a moderate horizontal crease across the photo.
The meeting between the two on March 14th 1985, was one of several Gorbachev held with foreign leaders who had been attending the funeral of his predecessor, Konstantin Chernenko. After Bush's meeting with the new Soviet leader, he came away saying he believed ''we can move forward with progress.'' Soviet Government press agency TASS said that Mr. Gorbachev had affirmed Soviet readiness ''to work in practice'' to improve relations with the United States. Mr. Bush said he had delivered a letter from President Reagan that American officials said contained an invitation to a meeting.
