Jonathan Cape, 1964. First edition, first printing. Octavo, original illustrated boards. Introduction by Paul McCartney. Signed to the the front free endpaper, “For Wendy, John Lennon” in bright blue ink. In very good condition. All pages intact; splitting to the lower portion of several of the latter pages (the book has notoriously fragile binding). Included is a letter of provenance from the original owner (Wendy) detailing how she purchased the book from Foyle's of London on it's release in 1964 and managed to get it autographed at the Beatles flat, 57 Green Street, Mayfair. A rare and desirable signed first impression of the author's debut.
The first solo project of any member of The Beatles, John Lennon’s first book, In His Own Write, is an amalgamation of short stories, poems, and line drawings, illustrating Lennon’s unique mastery of free association and improvisation. Originally published in 1964 by both Simon & Schuster and Johnathan Cape, the book was an immediate success and translated into several languages in the year of its initial publication.
