Meticulous antique print of violin virtuoso, Niccolo Paganini. A blue album page signed by Paganini (and dated in his hand "Glasgow 19 Oct 1831") has been added to the print along with another smaller image of him performing. At the time he signed this autograph, Paganini was coming towards the end of the European tour which helped spread his fame across the continent. The Tour started in Vienna in August 1828, and included stops in every major European city in Germany, Poland, Bohemia, France and Britain. His technical ability and willingness to display it received widespread critical acclaim.
This rare lithographic print, in a particularly rich and velvety impression, depicts Paganini in his most romantic guise, with tousled hair and gaunt cheeks, the product of his reliance on mercury and opium. It is based on a painting made by Pingret in Baden in 1831, now apparently lost. Nicolas Eustache Maurin was one of a pair of lithographer brothers, the other being Antoine, who produced a series of portraits of notables of the time. While the exact date of the lithograph is not known, it must be between the date that the Gihaut brothers received their brevet to work as lithographic printers, in 1829, and the date they began to contract out the printing to Auguste Bry in 1839. Total size including the frame is 25 x 19". The autograph and print are in excellent condition. The frame is fair, with scratches and chips commensurate with its age.
