A sepia image signed by civil rights icon and leader of India's campaign for independence, Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi. Gandhi has signed the image "M K Gandhi 24/6/33" in fountain pen. He appears to have penned the autograph on a magazine photo that's been affixed to a card backing. 5.5 x 4". In very good condition, with a couple of light creases. Signed images of Gandhi are particularly scarce.

The autograph is dated June 24th, 1933. Just one month prior, Gandhi had been released from Yerwada Jail, where he had been incarcerated since the beginning of 1932; his jailing was the result of a new satyagraha Gandhi launched after returning from the Second Round Table conference in London. While in prison, the British government enacted a new law (the Communal Award) that granted untouchables a separate electorate. In protest, Gandhi started a 'fast-unto-death' on September 16, 1932; despite being a member of the more powerful Vaisya caste, Gandhi advocated the emancipation of the untouchables, whom he called Harijans, or “Children of God.” The resulting public outcry forced the government, in consultations with Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, to replace the Communal Award with the compromise Poona Pact. An important autograph from a critical period in Gandhi's struggle for independence and universal rights.
