Robert Falcon Scott - an exceedingly scarce portrait photo by John Thomson, signed "Con" in black ink to the left side of the image. Photogravure laid on photographer's original mount, J. Thomson, By Royal Warrant embossed in blind. The photo measuring 145 x 100mm; the mount 249 x 177mm. The image captures Scott just a year before he led his Discovery expedition of 1901–1904 to the Antarctic. In very good condition, with toning and a few spots of foxing to the mount. Minor wear to the lower left corner. Scott often signed correspondence with family and friends with his abbreviated nickname, "Con", meaning the photo was almost certainly gifted to a family member or close colleague. Previously sold via Bonham's Auction Rooms in 2012.
John Thomson (1837 – 1921) was a pioneering Scottish photographer, geographer, and traveller. He was one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East, documenting the people, landscapes and artefacts of eastern cultures. Upon returning home, his work among the street people of London cemented his reputation, and is regarded as a classic instance of social documentary which laid the foundations for photojournalism. He went on to become a portrait photographer of High Society in Mayfair, gaining the Royal Warrant in 1881.
