ALS, across four pages, to "Dear Littleton" [Alfred Henry Littleton, head of the music publisher Novello & co.]. Rome, November 9, 1911. In fine condition.
In full: "My dear Littleton, We are here are all safely and find our flat very simple but comfortable and a glorious view. It is really one of the best situations in Rome and the walks on the Pincian are at our door or almost which is most convenient for Alice.
Please let Wood have all the material for his performance as soon as you can as there may be errors in the parts and he may have an early opportunity to rehearse – I do not think you had better print for sale until his performance is over, in case of mistakes and, for the first time for years, the parts go to the first performance without my playing them through with Austin.
I can’t tell how much I shall be able to work here: there are ‘voices most vociferous' and pianos most pianiferous in the street which is otherwise quiet but I’ll report later.
Kindest regards, Yours sincerely, Ed Elgar
p.s. our journey was most successful; May and I were not very good travellers but I think your coming to see us off (which was most kind) gave us good luck"
An interesting association piece, written to his publisher from the Elgar's flat at Via Gregoriana 38, Rome. They had taken out a contract to rent the 2nd floor apartment for six months, just two days prior to our letter being penned.
