A fine set of Beatles autographs featuring Jimmy Nicol, who was standing in for a sick Ringo Starr at the time. Obtained by Captain John Goodwin of B.O.A.C. when the Beatles flew onboard his Boeing 707 flight to Beirut on June 7, 1964. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Jimmy Nicol have all signed in blue ballpoint to the reverse of a B.O.A.C. picture-postcard. The autographs come with a signed letter of provenance from Captain Goodwin and a newspaper cutting which shows the Beatles and crew (Captain Goodwin circled in the image) greeting the crowds at Beirut Airport during the refuelling stop. The flight crew changed at Beirut but the Beatles remained onboard, travelling on to Hong Kong as part of their Australasian tour.
After a recommendation by George Martin, Jimmy Nicol was chosen as a stand in drummer when Ringo came down with tonsillitis on the eve of the tour. His first concert with the Beatles took place on 4 June at the KB Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Nicol played a total of eight shows until Ringo rejoined the group in Melbourne on June 14, his tenure lasting just ten days. A scarce sets of autographs from this extremely short lived Beatles lineup.
