Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), an autograph letter signed "Nelson & Bronte", July 23rd 1801, to the Right Honourable Charles Yorke. One page, in full: "Since I wrote you this morning to introduce Lt Col. Suckling to your notice, I understand that there are two Inspectors of Barracks vacant. If you will have the goodness to give my relation one of these appointments it will be a great obligation conferred upon Dear Sir Your very obedient servant Nelson & Bronte". 8.5 x 7.25 inches (21 x 19 cm), in very good condition. There are some paper remnants along the top edge of the back page, from previous framing. A few small holes caused by ink corrosion (the result of an ink patch on the back page that bled through to front of the manuscript), have been professionally repaired.
At the time the letter was penned, Napoleon was amassing his forces to invade Britain, and Nelson had been placed in charge of defending the English Channel. He subsequently spent the summer of 1801 reconnoitring the French coast. The recipient of our letter was the Right Honourable Charles Philip Yorke, Secretary at War 1801-1803.
